Lot description

16mo: [259 (of 260)] ff. (final f. [blank ?] missing).

19th-c. polished calf by Petit succ. de Simier, covers with triple gilt ruled border, richly gilt spine with 5 raised bands with morocco labels, gilt sides, a.e.g., gilt inside dentelles, silk marker (joints sl. rubbed, sm. def. at tail). Very good copy.

Extremely rare Petit ed. (6th recorded copy?) of a commentary on the Song of Songs by Fr. Le Roy (15th-16th c.), a monk of Fontevraud Abbey (Anjou), the famous double monastery with the graves of the English king Henry II, of Eleanor of Aquitaine, and of Richard the Lionheart. Woodcut mark on title. Printed in Gothic type.
