Lot description

Etching, 47 x 40 cm, laid paper, signed and captioned in Italian under the subject (some light foxing, old vertical fold).

Framed (not studied outside frame).

The rhinoceros Clara, facing left, with her keeper holding her horn and a whip. With spectators in the background, one dressed as Pagliaccio and a few wearing carnival masks. Etched by Alessandro Longhi (Venice 1733-1813) after his father's (Pietro Longhi, 1702-1865) painting made in 1751 for the Carnival. Published by Wagner (Thalendorf 1706-1780 Venice).
