Lot description

Original glass negatives in stereo, 5,8 x 13 cm, sm. labels on glass mount, kept in two tailor made wooden boxes, legends in pencil on a separate paper, one glass plate missing a corner. Good set.

Intriguing collection of the "Westhoek" in Belgium, especially of two small rural polder villages Nieuwkapelle en Oudekapelle. Both were severely affected by the war. Two Belgian front lines ran through or along the village. In 1916 a surgical outpost was built in Oudekapelle. The glass negatives show several views of landscapes touched by the war: destroyed houses, broken nature etc. Also some photos showing trenches and groups of soldiers around. A large part of photos nearby the sea. The legends in pencil on separate paper are difficult to read and do not (or not always?) match with the numbered labels on the glass plates which makes identification of what and where they are difficult. Nevertheless we can decipher numerous names of Belgian officers. An important testimony of worth studying.
