Abstract composition by the African-American artist Charles Alston (1907-1977). By the mid-1950s Alston began creating notably modernist style paintings with rich colours. Only after 1959 he began working in black and white, which he continued up until the mid-1960s, as a response to the Civil Rights Movement and the sufferings of the African-American population.
