Lot description
Engraving, 28,2 x 21 cm, laid paper with watermark (eagle), signed in the plate at lower left "J. Saenredam sculp." and L-monogram (heavily stained, trimmed to platemark, sl. toned, number 29 in pen and brown ink added at lower right corner).
Stuck by upper corners under passe-partout.
Jaël hammering a peg into the head of Sisera. After a drawing by Lucas van Leyden of 1517 The engraving forms a pair to the print of Judith and Holofernes by Saenredam. Second state (of 5), with added engr. calligraphic text.
