Lot description

2 vol., 12mo: front.-[4]-488 [X5 = index ? missing], front.-[4]-513 pp.; 7 pl. (some occ. faint stains).

Modern quarter calf, spine with 5 gilt orn. raised bands, red or green leather labels, red heads. Good copy.

New edition (1st 1759) with a fictitious imprint, actually published in Paris, of a compilation by the Jansenist polemist and polygraph Cl.-P. Goujet (1697-1767) of various texts by Louis Ellies Du Pin ("Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire de l'inquisition"), Philip van Limborch ("Discours sur quelques auteurs qui ont traité du tribunal de l'Inquisition") and Gabriel Dellon. The second vol. concerns more specifically the inquisition in Portugal and Goa and contains extracts of the "Manuel des inquisiteurs". Ill. (complete) with 2 front. including a portrait of Philippe III and 7 folding unsigned plates representing i.a. tortures, processions, convicts sent to the stake and a view of Goa.
