Lot description
8vo: [45] ff.
Loose, under orig. carboard portfolio with 2 ribbons, tipped-in cut out drawing on upper cover (2 flaps restored with thin paper). In a jute bag, printed in red on black background (tipped-in cut out drawing detached but present). Very good copy.
Very rare first edition of an artist book by the Uruguayan/Spanish artist Torres García (Montevideo 1874-1949), painter, sculptor, muralist, writer, teacher and theorist, considered the father of Latin American Constructivism but also very influential in the United States and in Europe where he met among others Piet Mondrian and Michel Seuphor; in 1929 they created the movement "Cercle et Carré" (Circle and Square). "The main goal of Cercle et Carré was to provide an artistic alternative to the dominant Parisian movement of Surrealism [...]" (Guggenheim Museums). Torres García returned to Uruguay in 1943 and introduced the avant-garde art movements (Cubism, Neoplasticism, Constructivism...) to artists of his home country.
