Lot description
Crayon-manner engraving in Ploos van Amstel's technique and roulette, printed from two plates in red and black, 26,1 x 20,7 cm, laid brown paper, signed with Goltzius' monogram HG at upper left corner, signed on verso "Ploos van Amstel I.C.", and his coat of arms.
Stuck by upper corners on cardb. mount.
Portrait of a young woman seated on a chair and holding a book. Based on a drawing by Goltzius, now in the Amsterdam Museum. From the early 18th century onwards, the seated woman was identified as the Dutch poet and engraver Maria Tesselschade Roemer Visscher, yet this has been proven to have been incorrect. Ploos van Amstel (1726-1798) created his own technique to copy master drawings into print by using special tools that allowed perforation of the prepared paper ground with irregular stroke patterns imitating drawn chalk lines, pastel and crayon.
Ref. Laurentius 18. - Van Sommeren 5882.
