Lot description

Sculpture, oak, 60 x 50, composed from three indiv. parts: body and two arms, no signature or marks (some fingers missing, some scratches, cross missing).

Jean Delcourt (1627-1707) was a Baroque sculptor from Liège, also known as the Bernini from Liège. After this training he traveled to Rome and became a pupil of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. He was also influenced by Ercole Ferrata. In 1661 he returned to Liège where he started a workshop. He sculpted wood, marble, and ivory for the wealthy leaders of the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. The elegant sculpture in the present lot shows an affinity to the facial type of Christ with slightly opened mouth, seen in Delcourt's marble sculpture of the "Reclining Christ", dated 1696, in the St Paul's church in Liège. Equally comparable is a bronze crucifix in the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), which is known in many copies (including wood), such as the one in the Palacio Real de Madrid (inv. 10014979).
Prov. Brussels collection.
