Lot description
Engraving, 19,6 x 13 cm, laid paper, signed and dated in the plate with monogram "HG / A° 97" (trimmed with the platemark but outside the borderline with thread margin, sm. brown stain upper right corner).
Under wooden frame and passe-partout (not studied outside frame).
The sixth plate of the Passion Series (12 pl.), which strongly reflects the influence of the Dutch engraver Lucas van Leyden, in both the figure types and the actual engraving technique. In contrast to his normal graphic style, which was characterised by a dramatic line that swells and tapers around the figures and background, here Goltzius uses thin even lines crossed with long straight hatching lines that are typically found in Lucas’s prints. In Northern Europe at the end of the sixteenth century there was a revival of interest in the works of Lucas and this engraving can be seen within that larger context. Good strong impression of the 1st state (of 2). Numbered in the lower left.
Ref. New Hollstein (Goltzius) 26.1. - Strauss 339.
