Lot description

54 visiting cards and 14 cards with birds, a couple of captions in pencil.

Kept in an obl. 8vo brown shagreen album (bookblock loosening, sl. rubbed), brass central element on front cover with initials "WW", brass cornerpieces (clasp gone).

Théophile-Théodore Wahis (1844-1921) was a Belgian soldier and colonial civil servant who served as Governor-General of the Congo Free State and, subsequently, the Belgian Congo. During the Franco-Mexican War (1864-67) he volunteered for service in the Belgian Legion and was sent to Mexico to fight alongside French and Imperial Mexican Forces. Visiting cards portraying among others Théophile, Louise and Céline Wahis. Also 14 cards showing painted and "feathered" exotic birds, possibly species found in Mexico, crafted with (authentic?) coloured feathers. At the end of the album 20 visiting cards portraying Mexican people in traditional costumes.
