Lot description
German ed., 36,9 x 50,4 cm, full col. (underlaid with conservation of the text on verso, stained edges). Still good copy.
First ed. of the Ortelius' maps of the Holy Land, published in his "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" in 1584. The map is based on a 9 sheet map of Palestine by Christian Schrot (c. 1570), which was based on cartographical material collected by Petrus Laiksteen, Dutch astronomer, during his stay in Palestine in 1556. The map is oriented with the north to the left and shows the coast from Gaza to Beirut. Biblical vignettes surround the title cartouche. In the lower left corner Jonas and the whale. Ref. van den Broecke Ort. 173.
