Lot description

Drawing, pen and brown ink, brush and brown wash, traces of graphite, 29 x 25,5 cm, underlaid paper (heavily damaged, horiz. creases throughout, some losses of paper, sm. tears at left edge, brown stains at upper left edge).

Stuck under passe-partout.

A vivid drawing after the famous ceiling paintings, originally made by Annibale Carracci for the Palazzo Farnese in 1597. The drawing represents Hercules making music for Omphale, while she is wearing his lion's skin and leans on his club. The scene is sometimes wrongfully identified as Hercules and Iole. A similar drawing after Carracci's fresco, executed in black chalk and grey wash, is now in the collection of the Chicago Art Institute (inv. 1922.3527).
