Lot description

London, Golden Cockerel Press, 1948

8vo (some min. spots and thumbing, some browning towards the margins).

Half red cloth, marbled paper on covers (def. at sides), flat ink titled spine. Wide-margined, uncut copy.

Edition limited to 750 copies. One of the 650 (n. 460) on mould-made paper. Illustrated with 11 wood-engravings by Buckland Wright (1897-1954). He was one of the most popular illustrators of the Golden Cockerel Press and now recognised as a major artist in the field of engraving, book illustration and printmaking. His swirling wood-engravings of sensuous women perfectly complement the long erotic poem by Swinburne (1837-1909). The Golden Cockerel was a major English private press active between 1920 & 1961. An important feature of the press's books were its original illustrations, usually wood-engravings. "Laus Veneris made one of JBW's most successful smaller books" (Cave & Manson).
