Lot description

8vo: [32]-216 pp.; 18 pl. (soiling and staining in the margins, pl. facing p. 131 missing some parts of paper, err. pagination continuing after p. 144 again with p. 113).

Mod. quarter calf, marbled paper on covers, gilt orn. spine with 5 raised bands, red leather title label, endpapers renewed.

First edition attributed to John Green, born Bradock Mead (ca. 1688-1757). Ill. with 18 engr. pl. Green laid out a critical approach to map making with instructions on how to draw different map projections such as the stereograpic and Mercator projections. He also voiced more general concerns about the improper practices followed by travellers and geographers who should have known better: "The abuses of negligent and unskilful geographers, had long since made something of this kind [i.e. this work] necessary, in order to put a stop to those spurious maps and incorrect books which were daily publish'd by them, and continued more and more to involve geography in error and contempt" (Dedication verso a2).
