First Latin edition (orig. Dutch 1625) of an important early geographical and historical work on America by the theologian and historian Johannes de Laet (Antwerp 1581-1649). Engr. ill.: impressive title within elaborate decorative border and with portraits of the admirals P. Heyn and H. Lonck, by C.C. Dusent, 13 double-page engr. maps (of 14, map of Venezuela missing) and many woodcut ill. in text showing America's animals (i.a. penguin, armadillo, walrus), plants & fruit, and native people.
