Original cabinet card, sepia-toned, 14,1 x 10,2 cm, photographer's gilt stamp on lower right corner, photographer's mark on verso.
Portrait of the Russian writer Tolstoj (1828-1910) dressed as a peasant by the Swiss photographers Martin N. Scherer and Georgy I. Nabholz. They moved to Moscow either in the late 1850s or about 1860 and took over the studio of Karl August Bergner.
