Mod. half calf with corners, marbled paper on covers, flat spine, red leather title label. Uncut copy.
Later edition of the French translation of "Nieuwe Beschryving der Walvischvangst en haringvisschery" (1791) by C.G. Zorgdrager (b. ca. 1660) about whale and herring fishing in the Northern Seas. Ill. with 6 engr. maps and 22 engr. pl. showing caught animals, fishing instruments, a herring fishery, a polar bear killing a fisherman, Sámi people in traditional costume, a Greenlander in a kayak, a sled pulled by a reindeer, etc. Part one on hunting whales, narwhals, porpoises, seals, walrus and herring. Part two on the indigenous peoples: Inuit and Sámi. Part three containing accounts of Greenland, Spitsbergen, Nova Zembla, etc. including a study of its flora and birds.
