Lot description

2 vol., 8vo: 712, 681 pp. (foxing, occ. marg. tears, occ. ms. annotations).

Publisher's purple sheep, blind- and gilt tooled orn. covers, gilt orn. spines with raised bands, red sprinkled edges (used, tiny tears on endpaper of vol. 1, left upper corner of 1st endpaper of vol. 2 missing).

Old Testament in the Syriac Peshitta version edited by the Dominican monks at Mosul for the use of their mission in Iraq and Kurdistan, under the supervision of Clement Joseph David (1829-1890), Archbishop of Damascus, and Georgius Ebed-Jesus Khayyath, Archbishop of Amid (Diyarbakır). This edition was issued in opposition of Protestant editions, judged by Catholic authorities as imperfect and wilfully corrupt. The third volume, containing the New Testament (published in 1891), is not present here.
