Lot description
5 vol., 8vo (occ. foxing or spotting, light marg. damp stain to engr. title of vol. IV).
Three-quarter green shagreen by L. Hulpiau, green paper on gilt ruled covers, spines with gilt ruled raised bands, brown spr. edges (rubbed, spines faded).
Publication compiled by the Ghent botanist and horticulturist Charles Morren (1807-1858) illustrated with 3 (of 5) identical engr. titles by Ch. Onghena and 292 lithogr. plates showing nice flowers and fruits (Nissen mentions 291 pl.), hand-coloured or chromolithogr. by G. Severeyns or Alex. Lagarde of which 10 folding and 10 pl. in b/w of which 2 folding; some woodcuts in text. Morren was director of the Jardin botanique de l'Université de Liège and was the first to discover a method for artificial pollination, which made it possible to cultivate vanilla in the French colonies (Wikipedia).
