Contemp. calf, gilt ruled covers orn. with a central flower tool, spine with raised bands (rebacked, rubbed). Wide-margined copy.
Second edition of L. Valla's translation (1st: 1564), "generally considered the best 16th-century edition of the greatest historian of Athens" (Schreiber). Edited by H. Estienne who revised the translation, corrected the Greek text and Scholia. He also added the "Proparasceve", listing and explaining the special vocabulary and technical terminology used by the Greek scholiasts. With the life of Thucydides translated by I. Casaubon. Greek-Latin text in juxtaposition. Estienne's mark on title.
