Lot description

2 parts in 1 vol., 8to: [3]-236-[4], [2]-249-[13] pp. (browning, occ. foxing, tiny tears on pp. 137-138 of part 1 and [q6] of part 2, sm. marg. waterstains).

Contemp. blind-stamped calf, covers with central ornament ruled with 2 frames of double fillets with corner pieces, orn. spine with 4 raised bands, gilt chiselled edges (damaged, residual painting on spine, traces of tabs, ties gone).

First Plantin edition of the complete works of Sallust by the Flemish humanist Ludovicus Carrion (ca. 1547-1595), editor and commentator of a great number of classical authors. The text is followed by Carrion's "scholies" on Sallust which were published with a separate title but normally sold together (like our copy).
