Lot description

1. "Pontus Euxinus." [Antwerp, Plantin Press, 1624]. Engr., 38 x 48,5 cm (sl. toned except centrefold). Framed. Map of the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov and the surroundings, in the third edition with the river name "Charus flu" (added in 1601) and "Borium Ostium" instead of "Boreum Ostium" (changed in 1624). From Ortelius' 1624 edition of the Parergon, an atlas depicting the ancient world. The cartouche refers to the myth of the hero Jason who first travelled the Black Sea to find the Golden Fleece. Ref. van den Broecke, Ort 213.

2. "Nouvelle carte de Moscovie où sont représentés les differents etats de sa majesté czarienne en Europe et en Asie et le chemin d'un de ses ambassadeurs a Peking ville capitale de l'empereur de la Chine et son séjour ordinaire." Engr., 51 x 59,5 cm, hand-coloured (centrefold). - 3. "[Carte de l'Empire Othoman considerée dans les etats de cette puissance, et des etats qui l'avoisinent ou qui luy sont tributaires, ainsi que deux] Petites cartes pour conduire à l'histoire universelle et en particulier à l'histoire d'Alexandre le Grand [...]." Engr., 50,5 x 61 cm, hand-coloured (centrefold). Both maps come from the fourth volume of Châtelain's "Atlas historique" [Amsterdam, Chatelain brothers, 1714] (n. 29 and 37), but the second map consists only of the right part of the map of the Ottoman Empire. The smaller maps mentioned in the title are not present. Ref. Koeman II-Cha 5/29 and 37.
