Folio: [12 incl. engr. title]-28 maps-[75] pp. (all maps mounted on guards, some dampstaining, mostly marginal not affecting the maps).
Mod. quarter calf with sm. corners (sl. rubbed), marbled paper on covers, spine with 5 raised bands.
Final edition of Mercator's Ptolemaic atlas, with an engraved allegorical title by J.V. Vianen, engr. vign. on title, headpiece by K. De Putter after G.F.L. Debrie, the second state of his Ptolemaic world map, 5 maps of Africa, 12 maps of Asia and 10 maps of Europe. R. & J. Wetstein and William Smith used the original and over 150 year-old copper-plates, except for the seventh map of Europe that was completely re-engraved. All the engravings are nicely hand-coloured. Title in red & black.
