Lot description
Folio: 61-[1 bl.] pp. (lower corner of title underlaid, some spotting, ink stains near the gutter at the end).
Contemp. dyed (?) calf (corners sl. bumped), spine with 6 raised bands (joints restored (?)).
First edition printed by the order of the King (of England according to Barbier). Narrative of the military campaign led by Menno van Coenhoorn (1641-1704), counterpart of Vauban, in order to let the impatient William of Orange and his allied troops regain control of Namur, conquered 3 years earlier by France and the troops of Vauban. Complete with 4 folding maps by Nicolas Visscher: "Plan de la ville & château de Namur", "Carte particulière des mouvements faits", "Plan des lignes et campements", "Plan du camp" engr. by Van Gouwen after Ottomar Elliger. "A battery of 200 guns was established and on 21 August began a continuous 24 hour bombardment of the Citadel's lower defences; assaults on the resulting breaches were extremely bloody, including 3,000 casualties in three hours on 30 August but the defenders surrendered on 4 September" (Wikipedia).
