Lot description

8 vol., 12mo: front.-xxxvi-[14]-472, [6]-444, [6]-475, [4]-533, [6]-418, [4]-502, vi-516, [6]-437-[7] pp. (some very min. spotting and browning).

Contemp. mottled calf (some corners rubbed, some sm. def. on covers), gilt orn. spines on 5 raised bands (heads and tails used), red edges, marbled endpapers.

Later, augmented edition (first 1722) of this "very pleasant and instructive work in many respects" and "the most copious that we possess on the Antilles" by the French clergyman, botanist, writer, explorer, ethnographer, soldier, engineer, and landowner Labat (1663-1738), who stayed for 10 years on the islands. Illustrated with a portr. front. and 97 (of 102) plates of which some folding, mainly figuring plants, trees and fruits (banana, cacao, coconut, fig, pineapple, avocado, manchineel, etc.), but also some maps (Martinique, Guadeloupe, Gulf of Mexico and West Indies, etc.), animals (lizard, parrot, etc.) and scenes of every day life (how to turn turtles, tobacco manufacturing, indigo production, etc.). Labat contributed to the development and the modernisation of the sugar industry. His own estate, Fonds-Saint-Jacques, was for a long time regarded as a model to be copied.
