Lot description

8vo (uncut).

Publisher's bradel, ivory paper with gilt decoration (back and boards edges browned).

First edition, issued to 525 copies on Holland paper (n. 424). De Kay (1848-1935) was an American poet and art critic.
Author's dedication signed to Jean-Henri Fabre (1823-1915), famous French entomologist known -beside his scientific work- for the lively style of his popular books on the lives of insects: "What do not the modern sculptors of animal life own to Barye, that modest patient student of art and science at the Jardin des Plantes? Like him but still living is Henri Fabre of Avignon explorer of the mentality of insects. Bary's monument overlooking the Seine in Paris was paid for in part of this book".
