Rare first edition of this remarkable work on naval hygiene by the French physician, botanist and naval engineer Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782). Illustrated with 5 engr. folding pl. The work consists of 19 "articles" about the air on board or around the vessels, on the diseases on board ship, on the precautions to be taken before or during boarding, on the attention that must be paid concerning the food on board, etc. Duhamel insists on health prevention and hygiene. He proves the necessity of renewing the air (through windsocks) and advocates the use of vinegar and sulfur fumigations. He pleads for absolute cleanliness on board. One important chapter is devoted to food and drink. Duhamel advises focusing on an antiscorbutic diet (rice, lemon juice, cabbage, etc.).
