3 vol., 8vo: xxviii-397, [4]-668, [4]-508 pp. (some min. spotting and browning).

Contemp. tree calf (corners sl. rubbed), gilt orn. flat spines (heads and tails def.), marbled endpapers.

Third ed. of this important work by Broussais (1772-1838), the most celebrated physician of his day, also called the "most sanguinary physician in history". His theory was that many diseases are due to inflammation, especially of gastrointestinal tract. In this work he begins to develop his doctrine which advocates his "médicine physiologique" (Garrison & Morton).
