An intimate drawing of a suffering Christ with crown of thorns. Degouves De Nuncques (1867-1935) was one of the leading figures of Belgian symbolism who often exhibited his work with members of "Les XX" and "La Libre Esthétique". This work dates from a critical period of mysticism, the artist went through between 1906 and 1916 after visiting the Romanesque village church at Xhignesse (Liège). He lived with the idea of decorating the church with paintings depicting the life of Christ.
