Lot description
[2]-41 pp.; 25 pl. (small spots, light marginal damp stains).
Loose under modern portfolio.
Commemorative album to mark the silver jubilee of King Leopold I's accession to the throne in 1856. The work comprises the frontispiece portrait of Leopold, remarkably lithographed by Warnot after Ghémar and Séverin's famous albumin portrait, an allegorical title page, designed and lithographed by Jules Helbig, and 23 lithographed pl. (2 on double leaves) depicting the public events held in the streets and squares of Brussels. The plates -coloured and heightened with arabic gum- by Gerlier, Canelle, Toovey and Claessens were executed by the Imprimerie Simonau & Toovey. The chariot procession gave an overview of the history from the Franks up to the 1850s in Belgium.
