Lot description

6 parts in 1 vol., 8vo: [16]-17-[4-1 bl.]-50-[4]-50-[4]-76-[4]-55-[5]-55-[1 bl.] pp. (toned).

Contemp. mottled sheep, gilt spine with 5 raised bands with morocco label, red edges (rubbed, joints starting to split, head and corners def.). Very good copy.

Rare collection of texts by medieval religious authors, edited by C. Oudin (1638-1717). Work included: 1. “Opusculum de fonte vitae” (in verse) by Hincmar, archbishop of Reims (806-882), advisor of Charles the Bald. - 2. “Tractatus” of Fulbert, bishop of Chartres (952-1028). - 3. “Opusculum de incarnatione Domini” of Hériman, abbot of St Martin of Tournai (1095-1147). - 4. “Opuscula duo” of Arnold of Bonneval (Marmoutier, d. 1156), a friend of St Bernard. - 5. “Commentarius in Cantica Canticorum” of William of St.-Thierry (1075-1148), Benedictine abbot of Saint-Thierry (Reims), later a Cistercian monk at Signy. - 6. “Libelli tres contra Judaeus”, refuting Jewish thought, of Walter of Châtillon (12th c.). 6 full-page engraved portraits (Hincmar bishop of Reims; Fulbertus bishop of Chartres; Hériman abbot of Tournai; Arnold of Bonneval; William of St.-Thierry; Walter of Châtillon from Tournai).
