Lot description

8vo: [1-1 bl.-8]-1059-[16-1 bl.] pp. (sl. toned, minor dampstaining in 1st quires).

Contemp. gold-tooled mottled calf, covers with gilt ruled borders and gilt central arms, gilt spine with 5 raised bands, gilt sides, red edges (rubbed, joints splitting, head, tail, corners def., front clover sl. cracked at top). Good copy.

First edition of the posthumously publ. philosophical essays of the Scottish philosopher G. Burnath (or Burnet, d. 1629), professor at the Protestant Academy of Montauban (Tarn-et-Garonne). The ed. is dedicated by J. Maire to Burnath’s Montauban pupil Jacques Gaillard. Woodcut mark on title. Title in red and black.
