Lot description
2 engr. 47,5 x 55 and 46,5 x 56,5 cm, part. coloured (marg. wormhole, centerfolds, small repairs).
Two editions of the same map of the Dutch Republic, the first by Frederick De Wit, the second by Nicolaas Visscher. Although Nicolaas Visscher's map, dated after 1658, was the original after which Frederick De Wit's copy was made, we have here De Wit's 1st state, dated ca. 1670, and Visscher's 4th state, dated more than fifty years later. Visscher's 4th state was published by Petrus Schenk junior who obtained the copper plate after the death of Nicolaas Visscher II's widow, Elisabeth Verseyl, in 1726. De Wit's copy is, however, not identical but includes a larger part of the eastern regions.
