Modern brown shagreen, spine on 5 raised bands. Binding in good condition, inside somewhat used.
Rare 2nd edition (1st 1671) of this first published travel report describing the Arctic coasts of Europe by P-M. de La Martinière (1634-1690), a French physician, surgeon and explorer. Illustr. with an engraved title by Ladame and 15 small engravings in text, including one map. Curious illustrations depicting Native samples, a Sami and his familiar spirit (a cat), Samoyeds, narwhal hunting near Novaya Zemlya, travel by reindeer sled in Lapland, diabolical idol, etc. In 1670, La Martinière was enlisted as a surgeon in a naval exploration trip supported by King Frederick III of Denmark and thus had the opportunity to wander through the coasts of Norway, Lapland, northern Russia, Novaya Zemlya, Greenland and Iceland for a period of five months.
