Lot description

3 works in 1 vol., 8vo.

Cont. limp vellum, flat spine (soiled, turn-ins partly gone, sm. def. at head). Very good interleaved copy with some 25 additional (mostly blank) ff. at the end.

Apparently kept by a contemporary Dutch plant grower who used the lists for his order administration (hence the removal of the "useless" titles): notes (in Dutch) on interleaved ff., i.e. at beginning of 2nd work: “arie en cornelis van Eeden ... te haarlem” (sales note), i.e. A. & C. van Eeden, Haarlem nurserymen (see Paradisus Batavus 140). 1. Meerburgh, Nicolaas - Naamlyst der boom- en heestergewassen, dienstig tot het aanleggen van Lustboschjes of zoogenaamde Hermitagie. Leiden, J. Meerburgh, 1782. 41-[7] pp. (lacking prel. quire *2 with title and Voorbericht; correction slip of 11 ll. pasted at top of F1v). 1st ed. (2nd c. 1800?). N. Meerburgh (1734-1814) was "hortulanus" of the Leiden Hortus 1774-1814. Ref. STCN 241226236 (1: The Hague). - Not in Paradisus Batavus. - 2. Catalogue universel des arbres, arbrisseaux, plantes et oignons étrangers, qu’on vend au plus bas prix, chez la Veuve de H. Valkenburg, et fils [...] à Leyden en Hollande [...]. Leiden, Wid. G. Boot, 1792. 100-[2, 2 bl.] pp. (lacking title, blank N4 pasted on N3v with imprint partly erased). 2nd recorded copy (?) of a list of plants available from Wid. H. Valkenburg in Leiden (pp. 1-90; 91-95 ‘Orangers, citroniers, etc."; 96-100 Rosiers; 100 Ceps de vins). Ref. WorldCat (1: Strasbourg). - Not in STCN etc. - 3. Gans, Jacobus - Nieuwe vermeerde [!] en verbeterde catalogus van in- en uitlandsche boomen, heesters en plantagie-gewassen van verschillende gewesten die meest overal in Europa in open grond kunnen groeyen en daar men zig van kan bedienen tot laanen, Engelsche bosschen en bloemperken voor civile pryzen te bekomen by Jacobus Gans ... tot Hillegom by Haarlem. [Haarlem?, s.n.], 1780. 56 pp. (lacking prel. quire *2 with title and Voorbericht, as well as the advertisement leaf at the end). Parallel Latin, English and Dutch lists, 937 species in total. Ref.
