Lot description

Bifolium, c. 28 x 21 cm (original folds).

In good condition.

Letter to an unnamed correspondent by Giovanni Francesco Albani (1649-1721), then papal prelate under Alexander VIII (Pope 1689-1691), who elevated him to the cardinalate in 1690. He was elected pope on 23 November 1700. In 1713 he issued the bull Unigenitus in response to the spread of the Jansenist heresy. This caused great upheaval in France and the Low Countries. Clement XI also tried to solve the Chinese Rites controversy with the Jesuits. Joined: [Printed] Forma dell’ indulgenze, che la Santità di nostro signore Papa Innocenzo Undecimo concede in perpetuo per Breue, che comincia Unigeniti Dei Filij &c dato alli 28.
