Lot description
12mo: [2]-67-[1] pp. (lacking final blank E4; spotting, some minor staining, some underlinings, sm. wormtracks in title).
Cont. vellum, spine on 4 raised bands titled in ink "Aqua Spadanie", red edges (soiled). Good copy.
Rare first Latin edition (orig. 1578) of this early work on the sources of Spa and Tongeren, by the physician P. Gherincx (1549-1604). He writes on the nature of the sources and which healing powers they have on which afflictions. In the 15 pp. Tongeren part, he aims to prove that Plinius' famous sentence "Tungri civitas Galliae fontem habet insignem" is about the mineral spring of Tongeren, and not that of Spa or Aachen, as other authors (a.o. Limbourg) have suggested. Large woodcut arms on last f. Ref. Body, Bibl. spadoise p. 9. - de Theux 23. - BT 1272. - STC Dutch (BL) 85. - Pettegree NB 13347. - Opac KBR. - Bn-Opale plus. - Not in Adams, Machiels. Prov. J.A. Mongiardini (ownership entry).
