Lot description
French manuscript on paper, 33 x 47 cm, ink and watercolour (upper margin reinforced).
Manuscript map of "Fort Knokke", located north of Reninge and Merkem, at the border of Nieuwkapelle. The plate represents the situation when the fortress was captured from the French in 1712 during the War of the Spanish Succession. By the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, the fortress was handed over to the Dutch Republic to provide a barrier against future French invasions. The maps of the "fort de la Kenoque" published by Pieter Schenck or Isaac vander Kloot show the same phase of development. After the visit of Joseph II to the Netherlands in 1781, the fortress was demolished at his command.
