Reissue based on the Paris ed. of Pralard, 1697, with a new title and different page order but with the same "Avis" and watered down translation ("On a adouci en quelques endroits des choses qui paroissoient trop cruelles"), by Abbot Morvan de Bellegarde, based on the "Brevisma relacion" (Sevilla, 1552) of the Spanish Dominican friar Las Casas (1474-1566), the first European to defend natives against violence perpetrated by the Spaniards. The (later watercoloured) frontispiece, by Bernard Picart, shows some atrocities. In his "Avis", the Dutch publisher de Lorme (Turkish born, became French by marriage and later settled in Holland) compares the behaviour of the Spaniards towards American natives with their treatment of Protestants. Las Casas' s text is followed by an account of the travels of Montauban, a French privateer (1650-1700) who was active along the Guinean coasts. Ref. Sabin 11274 (with plates [?]). - JCB IV:359 (frontispiece). - NUC, BN (frontispiece). - Not in Gay. Bound with, same ed., date and printer: [CHEVREMONT, J.B.].- L'art de voyager utilement. [4]-51-[1] pp. As mentioned in the foreword, the buyer of this book was given the choice of binding it together with Las Casas' book. Ref. JCB IV:359.
