Folio: [8]-1580-[80] pp. (clear dampstaining esp. on upper inner part of 1st quires, browning throughout).
Cont. blindtooled calf over wood, spine on 6 raised bands (rebacked), metal corner and central pieces (sm. def.), metal dated clasps and catches (straps renewed). Binding in good condition. Good copy.
The rarest of all Plantin Press editions of the great botanical encyclopaedia by Rembert Dodoens (1517-1585). Ill. with an engr. title by W. Swan (= Willem van Swanenburg, 1595-1612) and +/- 1382 woodcut ills of plants. With the "Beschriivinge van de Indiaensche oft Wtlandtsche boomen [...] die van Dodonaeus niet vermaent, oft niet beschreven en zijn geweest" on p. 1461. Text printed in 2 cols and in gothic type.
