Lot description

2 pp., bifolio 12mo, in French, on laid paper with letterhead "Grand Hotel Britannique/ Bruxelles" (sm. traces of paper clip).

"N'ayant pas eu le plaisir de vous trouver en ville, je me suis permis de déposer chez vous ma carte ainsi qu'un bien modeste souvenir [...]. Il vous rappellera peut-être de temps en temps un ami et un admirateur sincère de la Belgique et il vous prouvera en tout cas que j'ai pensé au héros de la Ville de Bruxelles lors de mon départ de la Chine". Lou was then Minister of Foreign Affairs of China (1915-1920), leading the China delegation in the Paris Peace Conference. He was also Prime Minister (1915-1916) and diplomat. In 1899, Lou married a Belgian woman, Berthe Bovy, in St Petersburg. When she died in 1926, he retired from an active life, converted to Catholicism (he was Protestant), became monk in the Benedictine monastery of Sint-Andries in Bruges, under the name Dom Pierre-Célestin, and was ordained a priest in 1935. In 1946, he was appointed abbot of the Abbey of St Peter in Ghent.
