Lot description
8vo: 31 pp. (ink stain on first upper corners, mod. ms. entry erased on title, spotting, last upper corner browned).
Mod. calf by Belz-Niédrée, blind-ruled boards decorated with gilt angular fleurons, blind-ruled spine with raised bands orn. with gilt Aldine fleurons, a.e.g. (tail missing, wormhole in front joint).
Latin primer by the grammarian and rhetoric teacher Donatus, the "Ars minor", dealing with the 8 parts of speech in the form of question and answer between the pupil Henricus and the teacher Donatus. First in Latin and followed with their French translation. The first edition by R. Estienne was published in 1526 and followed with many reprints. Estienne's device on title; French text in italics. End 18th-c. ms. note on front flyleaf titled "Contents" and signed by initials "H F A" about a collection (?) of works, also on grammar; a later note in French adding that all these volumes had been split out.
