Lot description

12mo: [12]-300 pp. (toned, some dampstaining).

Contemp. vellum, flat spine titled in ink. Good copy.

Translation from the French by Martin Martinez. The Catholic French jurist and antiquarian Remond (1540-1601) in 1587 published "L'erreur populaire de la papesse Jeanne", in which he argued, following Onofrio Panvinio, that the story of Pope Joan was a myth, and the references in the chronicle of Martinus Polonus were later interpolations. The present Dutch translation has (on ff. 5v-6r) an additional letter on the subject by Lipsius to Franciscus Sweertius (Latin text with facing Dutch translation). Printed in Gothic type.
Ref. STCV 3248752.
Prov. Collector’s ticket on title.
