Engr., 37,8 x 49 cm (light brown spot in the lower left edge).
Hinged at upper edge. Under passe-partout.
First state of the 2nd ovoid map of Flanders oriented towards the North Sea, that Mercator is said to have not only drawn, but also engraved. This 2nd map is very similar to the earlier map, but with compass directions now added in the corners. From Abraham Ortelius's 1579 "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum". Latin text on verso (leaf 32, no pagination).
