First edition of the translation of "Abhandlung über die Saamen und Infusionthierchen" (Nuremberg 1778), a major work in the field of microbiology: "Gleichen (1717-1783) was probably the first to attempt to stain bacteria; he used carmine and indigo" (Garrison & Morton). Ill. with 34 pl. (numb. I-XXXII + XXIII bis and 1 not numb. p. 41): 32 copper-engravings (9 fold.), some partly watercoloured, and 2 printed tables.
