Contemp. calf, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands (cracklings in leather, joints splitting, bands rubbed).
First edition of this lavishly illustrated travelogue by landscape painter Cornelis de Bruyn (1652-1726) publ. on the occasion of his seven-year stay in the Near East. Ill. with an allegorical front. by J. Mulder after R. du Val and author's portrait by G. Valck and more than 210 numb. ill. on single and folding sheets and in the text, engr. by Jan and Casper Luyken, among others (incl. 17 very large double-page fold. pl., and ill. lettered A, 22A, 22B, 22C, A (again) and B). The large folding plates offer impressive panoramic views of the cities of Smyrna, Messina, Scio, Rhodes, Alexandria, Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Cairo and Constantinople. The remaining iconography mainly concerns fauna and costumes. Title in red & black. Printed in 2 col.
