Ill. publ. cloth, gilt flat spine (front joint split, corners bumped, spine faded).
Detaild and abundantly illustrated account of the "Perry Expedition": the United States Navy officer led the diplomatic and military mission to end Japan's policy of isolation. Ill. with 93 lithograps (of which many coloured or tinted) of views, maps, portraits, etc., incl. the often missing, suppressed print "Public baths at Simoda" and 3 facsimile color woodcuts. Later ed. in 1 vol. (1st 1856).
