Lot description
Obl. 4to: [8]-732 pp. (title missing, 1 f. of introduction and last 2 ff. loose, map "Palatinat Bavariae" printed upside down, occ. spotting or light stains).
Contemp. vellum, ink-titled flat spine (spine partly restored with mottled paper, corners soiled, ink scrawling on boards, front hinge broken).
Latin edition of this very rare pocket atlas of the Holy Roman (German) Empire with 26 maps and 101 detailed views of towns located in Germany and Austria, and some in German speaking countries as Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland around 1600, possibly inspired by the town atlases of Braun & Hogenberg. This extensive historical-topographical description of the German Empire by Petrus Bertius (1565-1629), Flemish theologian, historian and cartographer, is divided in 3 parts: the ancient times with 6 small maps based on the "Tabula Peutingeriana", the history since Charlemagne with 20 full-page maps and, finally, the description of the towns illustrated with 101 fine perspective views.
Ref. Tiele 102.
