Second ed. of the French translation. Barth was a German linguist, geographer, anthropologist and explorer of West Africa. His research has brought new elements to the history of this region, thanks to the discovery of 17th-c. Arabic texts from Timbuktu in Mali. His scientific contribution also focused on Lake Chad and the Niger River. Ill. with 4 chromolith., 53 pl. with 92 views and the author's portrait.
